TechTown is a collaboration among the technology communities of Portland, Oregon. In less than two years, we’ve grown to include more than 20 companies and organizations. We came together because of a shared desire to showcase Portland as an emerging tech town with numerous growing and dynamic companies. Individually, tech companies can market their products and services; it’s a more difficult sell to convince tech professionals to pick up their lives and move to a new city. TechTown shows tech industry professionals that you can relocate to Portland to build your career.
The idea of TechTown came from Sam Blackman, CEO and founder of Elemental Technologies and a huge advocate for the Portland tech scene. Sam approached the Portland Development Commission (PDC) with his idea for a visual story about Portland’s assets as a tech community. PDC came on board, Uncage the Soul Productions got involved and together the three developed the concept for TechTown. Other companies added their support and feedback. The first TechTown video was launched in 2013 as a display of the local tech environment. To date, the video has been viewed more than 41,000 times in places like Boston, New Orleans, London and Tel Aviv, and has helped attract people from outside the region to Portland tech companies.
In 2015, we released a second video, and has been viewed more than 13,000 times. Rather than focusing on each company’s office space, we showcase the real stories of local industry professionals. Each of these highly talented tech workers has moved to Portland to grow their careers, and they share their stories in the video. Both videos can be viewed from the TechTown homepage and are available on Vimeo & YouTube.
